Long Skinny Dragon
Boulder City Library Launches Summer Program

The Library is your Castle! Queen Becky of the Book, Countess Carol of the Codex and Maid Mary Ann of the Manuscript, decree that all children will participate in the Boulder City Public Library's Summer Reading Program, "Dragons, Dreams, & Daring Deeds," from June 11 to July 23.

Two programs are planned to entice you to the Castle. An all ages event presented by the Society for Creative Anachronism takes place at 11:00 on Saturday, June 11. Next, especially designed for children of elementary age or younger, a performance is scheduled for Saturday, June 18, at 2:30. Children joining the Summer Reading Program will participate in the Coyote Puppet Theater's musical show: "Sir Coyote and the Bag of Letters." Sir Coyote needs YOU to help him rescue the Purple Princess.

At the performance, each child will receive a goody-filled book bag to tote their reading material. A free book is awarded upon the return of a completed reading log; in addition, each will receive a token for entry in a weekly prize drawing for a "Royal Purse."

Castle Craft programs for children entering grades K-2 in the fall will take place at 3:00 on Tuesday, June 14, 28, & July 12; those entering grades 3-5 will meet at 3:00 on Tuesday, June 21, July 5 & 19.

Boulder City Library to Offer Teen Summer Library Program

Her Grace, Queen Becky of the Book, invites local teens to "Joust Read!" this summer by participating in the Boulder City Public Library's Summer Reading Program from June 11 to July 23. Young Royals are invited to come to the library and read for prizes as well as to take part in special events offered throughout the summer.

Beginning June 11, at 11:00, teens in junior high and high school may join the program by attending the Society for Creative Anachronism's Summer Faire at the Library. The whole family will enjoy this festive occasion, where Knights will rattle the library with battle cries and clashing of weapons. There, teens will receive a book bag to tote home their reading material. A free book is awarded upon the return of a completed reading log; in addition, each will receive a token for entry in a weekly prize drawing for a "Royal Purse."

"Joust Read" teen craft programs will take place at 4:00 on Thursdays, June 16, 30, & July 14. Lords and Ladies, Peers of the Realm, prepare for the melee with favor'd weapons at the ready; the Crown Tournament is about to begin!

In anticipation of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) which takes place February 18 - 21 (see website at: [http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/], library staff talked to the folks in Natural Resourse Education at the Bureau of Reclamation, about creating a bird display for the library rotunda. Phil Aurit nominated Valerie Nelson for the project. What a great decision! She scoured the UNLV ornithology department and found bird "skins", nests, and eggs. She added all kinds of environmental accessories that show our local birds in their natural habitat. We added recorded bird songs, pictures of other birds seen in Southern Nevada during the winter, and a display about the GBBC with websites related to birding in our area. If you do not use the internet, you may still participate in the bird count. Pick up a printed packet, available in the library rotunda.

Library Assistant Mary Ann took the Junior Summer Readers on a gallop through the Old West, on June 24th. They each made their own horse and took a ride on "Pokey." The group enjoyed a story by James Herriot called Bonnie's Big Day.

Thanks to Kiley Lopan for the loan of the saddle and the beautiful horseshoe saddle rack!

All of the group pictures are now on display at the library. When the program is over, July 31, Junior Summer Readers may take their prints home. Just ask at the front desk.

Special Event!

Since the Bayers (of Coyote Puppet Theater fame) are back in town for the Folk Fest, the Young People’s Library is taking advantage.  We will put on a special presentation in the large meeting room of the library at 3:00 on Sunday, Sept. 14.  Their family geared show is called "The Old Melodeon Minstrels", an historical costume performance of Gold Rush song and dance.  Kids and adults get to play along on spoons and washtub.  There is no charge for this event, and students may use this library activity to add early credit to their “Connect for Kids” school literacy contest, which starts Sept. 22  Be sure to see Miss Becky to get your early credit slip.

Since many students at Boulder City schools will need to access the internet for class syllabi and grades, and not everyone has a home computer, some students will need to use the public internet services here at the library.  Students must have a library card.  For those under the age of 13 who can legibly print their first and last names, a parent fills out the application and takes responsibility for the child’s account.  The parents must present the same identification as if completing their own applications, a valid picture ID card that proves residence (see Boulder City Library District Handbook of Policies, for exceptions and variations).  Patrons 13 and older must present similar identification or bring a parent to do so.

The student then must read and sign a Computer Responsibility Statement which describes the rules for computer use, after which the student will receive the Boulder City Library computer sticker on the card.  Computers may be reserved up to two days in advance, either in person or by phone.  Walk-ins are welcomed, but reservations are recommended.  Computers are assigned for one hour and start on the hour.  Two of the computers are filtered for patrons under the age of 18.  These are often tied up during traditional student study time; parents may sign a release (ask at the front desk) permitting the use of any of our 6 internet computers.

We have received a new series of chapter books put out by Crabtree Publishing under the imprint of Yellow Bananas, that are getting rave reviews.  Aimed at students in second and third grades, the series uses exciting stories to address problems faced by this age group.  I highly recommend Colly’s Barn, by Michael Morpurgo, and Who’s a Clever Girl?, by Rose Impey.

Those of you who read Katherine Valentine’s first book, A Miracle for St. Cecilia, will be delighted to know that her second book, A Gathering of Angels, has arrived.  We find that a fire at  the Congregational Church in Dorsetville, Ct., threatens the life of Lori and Bob Peterson’s daughter, Sarah.  Meanwhile, Barry Hornibrook’s plans for a new hotel get dangerous as out-of-town mobsters become involved in the financing.  Yet, people in Dorsetville always lend a hand and there’s no telling what miracles are in store when they do.

Spanish speaking patrons have been pleased to discover that the library hired an employee with native conversational talents; now they will be happy to discover that the library has started a Spanish book section.  It is yet small, but growing.  Donations are welcomed.

Since school has started, here are a few tips for successful study using the library.  Start early!  If we do not have what you need here, in the building, and must order it from another library, it will take at least a week to get it here.  If you have a report assignment in which you may choose the topic, it is a good idea to check the library catalog and magazine indexes (did you know that you can do that from your home internet?  Go to:  www.bclibrary.org) before you select a topic.  A quick check will insure that there are plenty of sources for your report.

New books arrive every day.  Parents and kids will enjoy the clever wordplay in Margie Palatini’s rollicking romp, EARTHQUACK!  This picture book is dynamically illustrated by Barry Moser and cleverly updates the beloved story of Henny Penny.

Young adults will find out  about U.S. government spies, how they gather secrets, process information, and develop spying equipment Agent 007 – James Bond – would have loved.  Check out Spying: the Modern World of Espionage, by Ron Fridell.

There was no lack of excitement on Monday when the Bayers: Chris, Darla, and Danita, came into town.  Their musical puppet show, Coyote and the Imaginary Circus, was a hit with kids and parents.  The story had everyone thinking about what it means to use your imagination, and how the good guys can use it to keep the bad guys on the run.  Cookies and punch were served, and the kids made puppets from the craft book provided by the Coyote.  The library has obtained a copy of the CD, which may be played on a music player, or used on a computer to download all of the fun crafts and the words to the music.

New books that our young patrons might enjoy arrive every day.  Teens will find  themselves lost in the Song of the Lioness series as Tamora Pierce tells the story of Alanna, who disguises herself as Alan in her quest to become a knight of the realm of Tortall.  The first two books of the four part series are on the shelf now: Alanna: the First Adventure, and In the Hand of the Goddess.

The Boulder City Young People's Library kicked off this year's Summer Reading Program with the Bookin' Bikers in the amphitheater, where about 100 people enjoyed their songs, stories and shenanagens.  On Monday August 4th at 4:00, we will hold a celecbration performance to wrap up.  Coyote Puppet Theater, made up of Nevada's favorite musical family, Chris, Darla, and Danita Bayer, will entertain us with their latest musical puppet play, "Coyote and the Imaginary Circus."

Join us to enjoy songs, interaction, and surprises, as Coyote saves the laughter with help from his friends the librarian, a gorilla, Rosy the RAbbit, Hawk, Turtle, and Snake.  This show lasts 1/2 hour, with refreshments with the actors to follow.  The Bayers will have copies of their new play and fun-book available for purchase in CD form for $12.00.  Visit their wesite at http://www.nevadamusic.com

Congratulations to all the kids who earned free books in teh Laugh It Up @ Your Library Program.  So far the grand total of brand new books given away comes to 96!  Taht means that our young'uns read over 800 books so far this summer.  We will continuew to hand out free books when you turn in a reading log until school starts, but will no longer hadn out new logs.  Thanks to all those who participated.

A piece of history has landed at the Boulder City Library with the arrival of a book entitled The Hoover Dam Cooks, 1933. The cookbook contains over 300 recipes from the women who cooked for the men that built Hoover Dam. It is revised from the Boulder Dam Souvenir and Cookbook, which was published by the Ladies Aid of Grace Community Church in 1933. This little gem was rediscovered by local resident Cynthia R. Oakley. She found it in the library at the Community College of Southern Nevada misclassified under "water resources."  Oakley was overjoyed by her discovery and vowed to do something with this information. Why? "In my experience, lecturing on Hoover Dam, young women would ask, 'Did any women work on the Dam?' Their question was in context with their experience in the workplace today. In 1933, the majority of women worked in the home.

Hoover Dam Cooks, 1933 is a fine collection of recipes that represent "herstory."  It's from those who came, from all over the United States and several foreign countries, together for a great purpose, to build Hoover Dam," says Ms. Oakley.  Hoover Dam Cooks, 1933 will be available in the Nevada Room at the Boulder City Library.  For more information see http://hooverdamcooks.com/.

Holiday Hours.
The Boulder City Library will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (Tuesday and Wednesday, December 24 & 25), will close at 4 p.m. on New Years Eve (Tuesday, December 31), and will be closed on New Years Day, January 1.

Many books had Boulder City Library patrons talking this year. From new books from old favorite authors to authors making a splash for the first time and one very long awaited sequel…these are some of the books that were the most read, waited for, and talked about over the last year.

1) The Nanny Diaries the much-buzzed-about breakout bestseller by former nannies Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus was listed as the top seller of 2002 by on-line bookseller Amazon.com. The Nanny Diaries is an absolutely addictive peek into the utterly weird world of child rearing in the upper reaches of Manhattan's social strata.

2) Stupid White Men…and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation! by Michael Moore. According to Booklist: “The latest appraisal of contemporary American society by a popular and iconoclastic commentator.”
3) The Summons by John Grisham. Law professor Ray Atlee and his prodigal brother, Forrest, are summoned home to Clanton, Mississippi, by their ailing father to discuss his will. But when Ray arrives the judge is already dead, and the one-page document dividing his meager estate between the two sons seems crystal clear. What it doesn't mention, however, is the small fortune in cash Ray discovers hidden in the old man's house--$3 million he can't account for and doesn't mention to brother Forrest, either.

4) A Mind at a Time by Mel Levine. Recognizing each child's intellectual, emotional, and physical strengths--and teaching directly to these strengths--is the key to sculpting "a mind at a time," according to Dr. Mel Levine.

5) Shelters of Stone by Jean Auel. Readers waited over ten years for Jean Auel's fifth novel about Ayla, the Cro-Magnon cavewoman raised by Neanderthals.
